Awards for Arabic films: "Gaza mon amour" is the best Arabic film

The Palestinian film "Gaza mon amour" by the brothers Arab and Tarzan Nasser was declared the best Arabic film at the jubilee 5th Arabic Film Awards, which are traditionally presented and released at the Cannes Film Festival (July 6-17).

Hiam Abbass and Salim Dau in the Palestinian film "Gaza mon amour"

The film, which this year was also a Palestinian “Oscar” candidate, won another award, for the role for one of the most interesting and well-known Arab actresses, Hiam Abbass. It is an extremely warm and beautiful love story, less surreal, located in a region that is constantly boiling. Absurd, fun and cute, which many compared to Aki Kaurismaki.

"The Man Who Sold His Skin" was the only one to enter the Oscar race

This year, too, a large international jury decided on the awards for the best Arabic films, this time composed of 160 most important and influential film critics from 63 countries in the world, and in which I was a representative from Macedonia for the second time. The jury had a difficult task, because it is a very vital production and many quality works. There were 21 films in the race, a quarter of which were “Oscar” candidates.

“200 meters” won awards for directing and male role

Thus, the second film that won two awards, "200 meters", was a candidate for “Oscar” from Jordan. "200 meters" is an impressive debut by Ameen Nayfeh, who was born in the Israeli-controlled West Bank and where Palestinians must have special confirmation to cross into Israel. Exactly that wall and the distance along the air line of 200 meters, will turn into a real nightmare when Mustafa will not be able to get to the hospital to see his son. Ameen Nayfeh won the award for directing and Ali Suliman for the lead male role. The Egyptian documentary “Oscar” candidate, "Lift Like a Girl," won Best Documentary, and for best screenplay the award went to Тunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania for "The Man Who Sold His Skin", which entered the “Oscar” race for a foreign film.
